Getting Your Brand Mentioned by ChatGPT and Perplexity

What is AI brand visibility? AI brand visibility is how often and how favourably an AI assistant like ChatGPT or Perplexity names your brand when users ask for recommendations, comparisons, or explanations in your category. It is driven by how consistently your brand appears across the sources these systems retrieve and trust.

People now ask assistants questions they used to type into Google. “Best email tool for a small newsletter.” “Is this agency legit.” When the answer names four brands and yours is not one of them, you lost a customer you never saw.

The mechanism matters, because it tells you what work to do. These systems answer recommendation queries in two ways: from training data, where your brand needs to have been written about repeatedly and consistently, and from live retrieval, where ChatGPT search and Perplexity fetch current pages and summarise what they find. You influence the first slowly and the second directly.

Retrieval is the part you can act on this quarter

How does AI retrieval work for brand queries? When a user asks for recommendations, the assistant runs web searches, pulls the top results, and composes an answer from them. If the retrieved pages are listicles and comparison articles, the brands named in those pages become the brands named in the answer.

Follow that chain backwards. Perplexity answers “best X” questions largely from existing “best X” articles. So the question is not “how do I rank in Perplexity”. It is “which pages does Perplexity retrieve for my category, and am I named on them”.

The workflow I use on client projects: ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini the ten questions a buyer in your category would ask. Record which brands get named and which sources are cited. That list of cited sources is your outreach target list. It is guest posts, review platforms, comparison sites and industry publications. The work looks exactly like digital PR, because it is.

Consistency beats volume

The 2026 citation research consolidated across major AI platforms found Reddit cited at roughly 40% frequency across engines, with community and review content punching far above traditional marketing pages. Assistants weigh what independent people say about you more than what you say about yourself.

Practical consequences. Your brand name, what you do, and who you serve should read identically on your site, your Google Business Profile, your social profiles, review platforms and directories. Contradictions make a model hedge, and a hedging model drops you from the answer. If you run a local business, the NAP discipline covered in the local SEO guide is doing double duty now: it feeds AI answers as well as map rankings.

And be genuinely present where your category is discussed. A founder answering questions in a subreddit, honestly and without spam, creates the exact material these systems retrieve and trust. I have seen a single detailed Reddit answer show up paraphrased in assistant responses for months.

Your own site still matters

What should my site do for AI visibility? Your site’s job is to be the verifiable source of record for your brand. That means a clear about page with named people, plain statements of what you do and for whom, published pricing where possible, and pages that answer category questions directly enough to be quoted.

Assistants cross-check. When a model finds you in a listicle, it often retrieves your site to confirm what you are. If the site is vague, the mention dies there. Write your homepage and about page so a machine reading them cold could answer: what is this, who runs it, who is it for, what does it cost.

This connects to citation mechanics covered in How AI Overviews Choose Which Sites to Cite: the passage-level rules apply to brand pages too.

Common questions

How long does it take to show up in AI recommendations?
Retrieval-based visibility can move in weeks: get named on the pages assistants already cite for your category and you can appear in answers the next time those pages are fetched. Training-data visibility moves in model-release cycles, months to a year or more.

Can I just ask ChatGPT why it did not mention my brand?
You can, but treat the answer as a plausible story, not a diagnosis. Models do not have reliable introspection into their own retrieval and selection. Test with real category questions and track results over time instead.

Is there a tool that tracks AI brand mentions?
The category exists and is growing fast, with tools that run scheduled prompts across assistants and log brand mentions. Manual monthly testing with a fixed prompt list works fine at small scale and costs nothing.
